Land services on Maui

Whatever the land needs, we can do it all.

Every Maui property is different. It might be a backyard swallowed by guinea grass, an Upcountry pasture lost to brush, or a lot that has to be cleared and leveled before anything gets built. We handle all of it, from a single overgrown lot to acres of brush, with the same care whether the job is big or small.

Because one owner-operated crew clears, mulches, grades, and hauls, there's no waiting on a second company and nothing lost in hand-offs. And when the ground is ready, we can build the fence too.

Land clearing

Overgrown lots, heavy brush, and tangled thickets cleared to open your property back up. We can clear the whole site or work selectively around the trees, plants, and features you want to keep, then mulch the debris on site or haul it away.

On Maui

Guinea grass and haole koa can take back cleared ground within a single rainy season. We'll talk through how to keep it open, whether that's mulch, grading, or getting a fence and plantings in soon after.

Clearing vs. mulching

Clear it or mulch it? Here's the difference.

They sound alike, but they leave your land in very different shape. Here's how the two compare, and when each one makes sense.

Grind it in place

Mulching

What happens

Brush, grass, and small trees are ground into mulch right where they stand.

Best for

Pasture, acreage, fire breaks, trails, and fence lines.

What's left

A layer of mulch that shields the soil from sun, wind, and rain, then breaks down over time.

Hauling

Little to none. The material stays on site as cover.

Ground disturbance

Light. Roots stay in the ground and help hold the soil.

Take it all out

Full clearing

What happens

Vegetation is pushed out and removed, along with stumps and roots where the ground needs it.

Best for

Building sites, areas being graded, and anywhere stumps have to go.

What's left

Bare, workable ground that's ready for grading or building.

Hauling

Debris hauled off in our dump trailer, or mulched on site.

Ground disturbance

Heavier, so grading and erosion control are part of the plan.

Often, it's both. We mulch the brush across most of the property, then clear and grade only where you're building. You keep the soil covered and only pay to move what really has to go.

Ask which fits your land

Fire breaks & fuel reduction

Less fuel, more breathing room.

Maui's wildfire guidance calls it defensible space: the ground around a home, managed in three zones out to 100 feet. Pick a zone to see what it asks for and where our land work fits in.

Close neighbors? Many Maui homes sit less than 100 feet apart, so the guidance encourages neighbors to create defensible space together. It's a natural project for a whole street or an HOA.

Zone 0 · 0–5 ft

Right around the house

What the guidance says

  • No plants within 5 feet of the house. Gravel or pavers work well here.
  • No mulch, leaf litter, or plant debris around or under the home and lanai.
  • Fencing that attaches to the house should be noncombustible for its first 5 feet.

Guidance summarized from the Maui Wildfires Mitigation Assessment Team's Recovery Advisory #2 (October 2024). Check with Maui County before work that may need a permit.

  1. Reach out

Call Keaghan, or send the form below. The location and a rough idea of the size help us understand the job right away.

  2. Walk the land

When it helps, Keaghan comes out to see the property in person: access for equipment, slope and soil, what's growing, and what you want to keep.

  3. Get a plan

You'll get a straightforward plan for the work and an estimate before anything starts, so you know exactly what to expect.

  4. Do the work

We clear, mulch, and grade with our own track loader and excavator, working around the trees and features you're keeping.

  5. Leave it ready

Debris is mulched on site or hauled off in our dump trailer, and the ground is left ready for building, planting, or a new fence line.

Land services FAQ

Land work questions, answered.

What Maui property owners ask most before they clear, mulch, or grade.

What's the difference between land clearing and mulching?

Land clearing removes vegetation, and often stumps and roots, so the ground can be graded or built on, with the debris hauled away or mulched. Mulching grinds brush, grass, and small trees into a layer of mulch that stays on the ground, which protects the soil and means far less hauling. Many properties get a mix: mulching across most of the land, with full clearing only where you're building.

How much does land clearing cost on Maui?

It depends on the property: how much ground there is, how thick the brush and trees are, slope and access for equipment, whether stumps need to come out, and whether debris is mulched on site or hauled away. We take on everything from small residential jobs to six-figure projects. Call with the location and a rough size for a quicker read on your job.

What happens to all the brush and trees you clear?

It's either mulched on site, where it helps protect the soil, or loaded up and hauled off in our dump trailer as green waste. Burning isn't an option for most properties: backyard burning of yard waste has been banned statewide in Hawaiʻi since 2012, and farms need a Department of Health permit for agricultural burning.

Do I need a permit to clear or grade my land?

Sometimes. The County of Maui issues grading permits for moving soil and grubbing permits for removing vegetation from the ground. Whether a project needs one depends on its size, location, and the kind of work involved, and some smaller jobs are exempt. The County's Development Services Administration can confirm what your project needs, and we'll point out anything that might need a permit when we look at the property.

Can you work on steep, rocky, or hard-to-reach ground?

Often, yes. Our track loader and excavator run on tracks, which grip and spread their weight better than wheels on soft, sloped, or uneven ground. Every site is different, though, so we look at access and slope before we commit to a plan.

When's the best time of year to clear land on Maui?

Most land work can happen year-round. The wetter months, roughly October through April, bring muddy ground and fast regrowth, so timing matters for grading and big clearing jobs. For tall trees, state and federal wildlife guidance asks that trees over 15 feet not be cut or trimmed from June 1 to September 15 to protect young Hawaiian hoary bats. Fire breaks are best cut ahead of the drier summer months.

Can you cut a fire break or clear brush around my home?

Yes. We cut fire breaks along property lines, fence lines, and roads, and clear dry grass and brush back from homes and outbuildings. Maui's wildfire guidance looks at the ground in zones out to 100 feet from the house, with grass kept under 4 inches. Call and we'll talk through what makes sense for your property.

Once the land is cleared, can you build the fence too?

Yes, and it's one of the best reasons to hire one crew. Keaghan has more than seven years of fence-building experience, from privacy and vinyl to cattle, deer, and welded wire. We can clear and grade the fence line, then build the fence, with no hand-off between companies.
