Getting started

Estimates, pricing, and what happens when you reach out.Contact page

How do I get an estimate?

Call Keaghan at 530-884-4085, email mflmhawaii@gmail.com, or send the estimate form on this site.

How do you price a job?

Every price is built around the job: what needs doing and how much of it, the ground and how easy it is to reach, materials, disposal fees, and the drive out. There's no one-size price list, but you'll get a straight price before any work starts. A quick call with your town and what you need is the quickest way to get one.

What should I include when I reach out?

Your town (or island), what you need done, and a rough size: the length of the fence line, how much ground to clear, or how big the pile is. Timing helps, and so does anything about access, like gates, dirt roads, or a steep driveway. Rough numbers are fine.

Do I have to fill out the form?

No. A call works just as well. Call Keaghan at 530-884-4085 with your town and a line about what you need, and he'll take it from there.

Will you come out and look at the property?

When it helps, yes. Smaller jobs can often be priced from photos and a quick call. Bigger or trickier ones usually need Keaghan to walk the property first. Either way, you'll get a straight price and a plan before any work starts.

How soon can you get out to my property?

It depends on the schedule and where you are on the island, so ask when you reach out. The quickest way to get on the calendar is to call 530-884-4085 with your town and what you need.

How soon will I hear back?

Keaghan answers every call himself, so if he's out on a machine, he may not pick up right away. Leave a message with your name and town, and he'll get back to you as soon as he can.

Clear it.

Land services

Clearing, mulching, grading, tree removal, and fire breaks.Land Services page

What's the difference between land clearing and mulching?

Land clearing removes vegetation, and often stumps and roots, so the ground can be graded or built on, with the debris hauled away or mulched. Mulching grinds brush, grass, and small trees into a layer of mulch that stays on the ground, which protects the soil and means far less hauling. Many properties get a mix: mulching across most of the land, with full clearing only where you're building.

How much does land clearing cost on Maui?

It depends on the property: how much ground there is, how thick the brush and trees are, slope and access for equipment, whether stumps need to come out, and whether debris is mulched on site or hauled away. We take on everything from small residential jobs to six-figure projects. Call with the location and a rough size for a quicker read on your job.

Do you take down trees?

Yes. We take down unwanted, overgrown, and storm-damaged trees, using the excavator's reach for heavy trunks and limbs, and the wood is mulched on site or hauled away with the rest of the debris. Planning to take down a tall tree? Talk to us early: trees over 15 feet shouldn't be cut from June 1 to September 15, while young Hawaiian hoary bats may be roosting in them.

Do you do grading and lot prep?

Yes. We level and shape uneven ground for building sites, yards, gardens, pasture, and new fence lines, and slope it so rainwater runs away from the house instead of toward it. That also helps keep Maui's red dirt from washing away. Bigger jobs can need a County grading permit, so we'll flag that early.

Can you cut a fire break or clear brush around my home?

Yes. We cut fire breaks along property lines, fence lines, and roads, and clear dry grass and brush back from homes and outbuildings. Maui's wildfire guidance looks at the ground in zones out to 100 feet from the house, with grass kept under 4 inches. Call and we'll talk through what makes sense for your property.

What happens to all the brush and trees you clear?

It's either mulched on site, where it helps protect the soil, or loaded up and hauled off in our dump trailer as green waste. Burning isn't an option for most properties: backyard burning of yard waste has been banned statewide in Hawaiʻi since 2012, and farms need a Department of Health permit for agricultural burning.

Can you work on steep, rocky, or hard-to-reach ground?

Often, yes. Our track loader and excavator run on tracks, which grip and spread their weight better than wheels on soft, sloped, or uneven ground. Every site is different, though, so we look at access and slope before we commit to a plan.

Do I need a permit to clear or grade my land?

Sometimes. The County of Maui issues grading permits for moving soil and grubbing permits for removing vegetation from the ground. Whether a project needs one depends on its size, location, and the kind of work involved, and some smaller jobs are exempt. The County's Development Services Administration can confirm what your project needs, and we'll point out anything that might need a permit when we look at the property.

When's the best time of year to clear land on Maui?

Most land work can happen year-round. The wetter months, roughly October through April, bring muddy ground and fast regrowth, so timing matters for grading and big clearing jobs. For tall trees, state and federal wildlife guidance asks that trees over 15 feet not be cut or trimmed from June 1 to September 15 to protect young Hawaiian hoary bats. Fire breaks are best cut ahead of the drier summer months.

Haul it.

Junk removal

Rubbish, green waste, and storm cleanup, loaded up and hauled off.Junk Removal page

What kinds of junk do you haul?

Rubbish, green waste, storm debris, downed trees and limbs, debris from clearing jobs, and old fencing, from a single pile to a whole property. We also clean up overgrown yards and lots. Not sure about something? Call and ask.

How much does junk removal cost on Maui?

It depends on how much there is, what it is, how easy it is to reach, whether trees need cutting or piles need a machine, and disposal fees, which Maui's drop-off sites charge by weight. You'll get a straight price before any work starts, and a quick call is the quickest way to get one.

Is there anything you can't take?

Hazardous materials like paint, chemicals, fuel, pesticides, and asbestos need special handling and can't go in a regular load. Maui's landfills also turn away appliances, tires, car batteries, and propane tanks, which have to go to recyclers instead. If you have any of these, mention them when you reach out and we'll tell you what we can take.

How soon can you come, and how long does it take?

It depends on the schedule and the size of the job, so ask when you reach out. Smaller haul-offs are often a single visit. A whole property or a big storm cleanup can take more than a day, and you'll know the plan before we start.

Do I need to move everything to the curb?

No. We load from wherever it is, whether that's the backyard, a fence line, or the back of the lot. Before we start, we'll go over what's going and what's staying, in person or over the phone.

What happens to the green waste you haul away?

It's loaded separately from rubbish and taken to an approved green waste drop-off, never dumped in a gulch or on an empty lot. That matters on Maui, where little fire ants and coconut rhinoceros beetles can travel in green waste, mulch, and compost.

Can't I just burn my green waste?

Not on most properties. Backyard burning of yard waste has been banned statewide in Hawaiʻi since 2012, and agricultural burning needs a Department of Health permit. That leaves hauling it away or mulching it on site, and we can do either.

Can you help clean up after a storm?

Yes. After high wind or heavy rain, we clear downed trees and limbs, haul away storm debris, and clear and repair fence lines for homes, businesses, and communities. Call with what happened and where, and we'll start with whatever's blocking access.

I have storm damage. Who should I call first?

If a power line is down or anyone is in danger, stay clear and call 911 or Hawaiian Electric first. Once it's safe, call Keaghan with your town and what happened. We'll start with whatever's blocking access: downed trees and limbs, debris, and damaged fence lines.

Fence it.

Fencing

Fence types, costs, permits, repairs, and building for Maui's conditions.Fencing Services page

How much does a new fence cost on Maui?

It depends on the length of the line, the type and height of fence, and the ground: slope, rock, and soft soil all change how the posts go in. Brush or an old fence that has to come out first, and how easy the line is to reach, play a part too. Material costs vary a lot between fence types, and some materials ship in from off-island. You'll get a straight price before any work starts, and a quick call with a rough length is the quickest way to get one.

What types of fencing do you install?

Privacy fencing in wood or vinyl, plus vinyl, chain link, metal, cattle, deer, and welded wire fencing, for homes, ranches and farms, businesses, and HOAs anywhere on Maui. We also repair fences and take out old ones.

How tall does a fence need to be to keep axis deer out?

About 8 feet. Axis deer clear the older 4-foot fences that were built for pigs and goats, and the State has been raising Maui's forest fences to 8 feet for the same reason. Height isn't everything, though: the bottom edge has to stay tight to the ground, and the corners can't leave a gap.

What's the best fence material near the ocean?

Salt air is hard on bare steel and cheap hardware. Close to the coast, vinyl is a popular choice because it won't rust or rot, and coated or galvanized metal and chain link hold up far better than bare steel. Wood can work too, but it needs more upkeep. We'll talk through what fits your property and your budget.

Do you repair fences, or only build new ones?

Both. We fix leaning posts, broken boards and panels, and sagging or snapped wire, and we repair fence lines after storms. If a fence is past saving, we'll tell you, then take the old one out and build the new one.

Can you take out my old fence?

Yes. We pull the old fence out, posts and all, and haul it away in our dump trailer, with the wire and metal going to recycling. Then we build the new one, so there's no second company to coordinate.

Do I need a permit to build a fence on Maui?

Many fences don't, but height limits, setbacks from the property line, and the Special Management Area along the coast can apply, depending on where the fence goes. The County of Maui's Development Services Administration can confirm what your project needs, and we'll point out anything that might need a permit when we walk the line.

How long does a fence installation take?

It depends on the length, the ground, the type of fence, and whether materials need to be ordered in. Setting the posts takes the most time; once they're in, the rest of the fence goes up quickly. You'll get a schedule along with your price, before any work starts.

Can you clear the fence line before you build?

Yes, and it's one of the best reasons to hire one crew. We clear brush and trees, level rough ground, and haul off the debris with our own equipment, then build the fence on a clean, straight line.

Where exactly will the fence go?

Where you want it, once we've walked the line together. If you're not sure where your property line is, have the corner pins located by a land surveyor first. It's the best way to avoid trouble with the neighbors later.

All of Maui.

Service areas

Where we work, the drive out, and jobs on other islands.Service Areas page

Do you serve my part of Maui?

Yes. We work all over the island: Central, South, and West Maui, Upcountry, the North Shore, and out to Hāna. That includes Kahului, Wailuku, Kīhei, Wailea, Lahaina, Kāʻanapali, Kapalua, Makawao, Pukalani, Kula, Pāʻia, Haʻikū, and every town in between. If your property is on Maui, we'll come to you.

Where are you based? Do I need to come to you?

No, we come to you. We're based here on Maui, and every fencing, land, and hauling job happens on your property, so there's nowhere you need to go. Call Keaghan at 530-884-4085 with your town and what you need, and he'll take it from there.

Does it cost more if I'm out in Hāna or another far corner of the island?

Travel is part of every price, along with the size of the job and how easy the site is to reach, so a long drive can add to it. Far East Maui, like Hāna, Kīpahulu, and Kaupō, also takes more planning to get machines and materials out there, so mention where you are when you reach out. Either way, you'll get the full price before any work starts.

Do you work on Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Oʻahu, Hawaiʻi Island, or Kauaʻi?

Yes, by inquiry. Maui is home, but we'll travel to the other islands for the right project, from Molokaʻi and Lānaʻi to Oʻahu, the Big Island, and Kauaʻi. Off-island jobs take more planning: machines and materials often have to cross by barge, and the crew needs a place to stay. Tell us the island, what you need, and your timing, and you'll get a straight answer on whether we can make it work, and what it would cost.

My property is up a dirt road or a steep driveway. Can you still get there?

Usually, yes. Our track loader and excavator handle soft, sloped, and uneven ground well, but they still have to be trailered in, so tell us about gates, tight turns, dirt roads, and steep driveways up front. A few photos of the way in help a lot.

Who we are.

About us

Who you'll work with, the equipment, and the jobs we take on.About page

Who will I be working with?

Keaghan Gomes, the owner. Keaghan answers the calls, walks the property when a job needs it, and runs the equipment himself, so the person you talk to is the person doing the work.

Are you a new company?

Yes. The company is new, but the experience isn't: Keaghan has spent more than 7 years building fences, and now runs a crew and equipment that also clear, mulch, grade, and haul. Every job is how a new company earns the next one, so every property gets our full effort.

What services do you offer?

We handle fencing, land services, and junk removal. That includes any type of fence (privacy, vinyl, chain link, metal, cattle, deer, and welded wire); land clearing, mulching, grading, tree removal, and fire breaks; and rubbish, green waste, and storm debris removal. Because one crew does it all, we can take a property from overgrown to fenced in without you coordinating multiple companies.

What equipment do you use?

A Kubota SVL97-3 track loader, a Komatsu PC88MR excavator, and a dump trailer. The loader and excavator run on tracks, which grip and spread their weight on soft, sloped, and uneven ground, and the dump trailer hauls off brush, debris, and green waste.

Do you work on residential or commercial properties?

Both. We work with homeowners, ranches and farms, property managers, HOAs, builders, and commercial properties. If you've got land that needs clearing or a fence line that needs building, we'd like to hear about it.

Do you work with property managers and HOAs?

Yes, along with homeowners, ranches and farms, builders, and businesses. If you manage a property for someone else, include the address or town and who we should coordinate with on site.

How big of a job can you take on?

Jobs of every size, from a single backyard fence to large land clearing and fencing projects in the six figures. Big or small, every job gets the same hardworking crew and the same attention to detail.

Are you insured?

Yes. Maui Fencing & Land Management carries $5 million in insurance coverage, so you can hire us with confidence.

Still have a question? Ask Keaghan.
